AMD’s answer to the insanely powerful RTX 4090 has finally broken the lid, in the form of the all-new Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about these new RDNA 3 cards, from price and performance to where you’ll be able to buy one, when 13th of December release date coming.
So let’s talk performance, first and foremost. AMD has stated that these top of the line RX 7000 cards should be up to 70 percent faster than their predecessors, with 1.5x better FPS figures in COD: MW2 for example, and 1.7x in Cyberpunk 2077. AMD achieves this through a new chiplet-based design, combining a cutting-edge 5nm process for the graphics compute array and six 6nm memory cache arrays interconnected via a 5.3TB/s interconnect.
Using a chiplet design should allow for improved yields and lower manufacturing costs, which should lead to lower consumer prices. This idea formed the basis of Ryzen’s success in the desktop CPU space, so it will be particularly interesting to see how they perform in the GPU space as well.
Elsewhere, AMD is saying the right things to people unhappy with Nvidia’s RTX 40 series announcements. The power targets haven’t changed significantly, the boards are a decent size, only two eight-pin power inputs are required, raster performance looks good and DisplayPort 2.1 is included – so all in all, exciting stuff.
Where to buy Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT in the UK?
You should be able to buy the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT from a range of major UK retailers, which we’ve summarized in a handy table below. It would make sense that stock sells out quickly, so consider checking out a second or even third stockist if you can’t order from your usual favorite store.
Where to buy Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT in the US?
The RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT should be available in a wide variety of major US stores, which we’ve summarized in a handy table below. Stock is expected to sell out quickly, so consider checking out a second or even third retailer if you can’t order from your regular store!
How fast are Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT?
In short: incredibly fast compared to older cards. As mentioned in the intro, the RX 7900 XTX offers 50 to 70 percent higher frame rates than the RX 6950 XT in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Cyberpunk 2077.
But we don’t yet have performance data on the RX 7900 XT. If we look at the specs, we expect to see a 15 to 20 percent drop in frame rates, as we see a similar range of specs in terms of CUs, game clock, memory interface, card power and so on – despite only being $100 difference in price.
Elsewhere, the RX 7900 XTX looks like a capable contender in raster (and to a lesser extent RT) performance. AMD’s performance figures include maximum possible frame rates for Apex Legends, Overwatch 2 and Valorant at 1440p, 275 to 704 fps at 4K with FSR in games like Hitman 3, Modern Warfare 2 and F1 22.
Elsewhere, the 7900 series cards also include DisplayPort 2.1 support, allowing up to 8K 165Hz or 4K 480Hz displays (neither of which exist yet). AV1 encoding/decoding support and dual media encoders are also included, which is a boon for streamers and content creators.
What are the prices of Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT?
AMD’s official retail prices for the RX 7900 XTX and 7900XT are $999 and $899 respectively, making them quite a bit cheaper than the RTX 4090. Interestingly, the prices haven’t gone up compared to last-gen GPUs, and actually represent a reduction in MSRP compared to the RX 6950 XT, which sold for $1299.
This would suggest that the expected cheaper manufacturing costs associated with a chiplet-based card are being passed on to consumers in the form of a price cut, which is especially nice to see, given the massive behemoth of the RTX 4090’s MSRP.
What are the specs of the RTX 4090?
It must be emphasized that the RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT are insanely powerful cards, not only compared to their predecessors and with AMD’s quoted benchmark figures, but also in general, not least thanks to the advantages of a 5nm processor node, a chiplet-based design , and all the extra goodness it brings.
